Your newsletter is like a friendship

Your newsletter is like a friendship

Think about your best friend.

You didn't start out as best friends. It began with a meeting. A conversation. And over time – trust.

That's exactly how a good newsletter works.

First meeting: You need to be found

All friendships start with someone showing up.

The same goes for new readers. Before they can become your readers, they need to find you. And if you're not visible where your target audience is, it's no mystery why you're not getting any sign-ups.

Your first task is simple: Be visible.

The first conversations: Curiosity builds bridges

When you meet a potential friend, you start asking each other questions. Who are you? What are you passionate about?

New readers are exactly the same. When they sign up, they are curious. They want to know who you are, what you stand for – and whether you are worth listening to.

This is where your newsletters come into play. Every letter is a conversation. A chance to let them get to know you.

Trust takes time – but it's worth its weight in gold

A friendship requires time, consistency and honesty. You share something of yourself. They share something of themselves. Slowly, you build something that lasts.

When your readers have been following you for weeks and months, something crucial happens: they trust you.

And people buy from those they trust – not just once, but again and again.

That's why the best newsletter isn't the most polished one. It's the most human one.

It's not about selling – it's about building relationships

The strongest friendships are not those where one person always wants something.

The same applies to your newsletter. Readers who feel seen and helped don't just become customers. They become repeat customers – and they tell others about you.

The next time you write, ask yourself one question: Would I send this to a good friend?

If yes – then send it.
